Review
Computer Networks: A Systems Approach, designed for anadvanced college-level course in network design and operation, providesthe network applications programmer with detailed information about hownetworks do their thing. While Computer Networks is neither auser manual nor a technical reference, it provides an in-depthbackground on how network architectures and protocols work.
In the beginning, Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie discuss whynetworks are important and talk about where networks may go in the longterm. The authors then move right into a discussion of protocols. There’s a fascinating section–complete with plenty of C code–in whichthe authors actually develop a network protocol called A SimpleProtocol (ASP). They compare switching and packet networks andemphasize tunneling protocols. In the internetworking chapter, you’lllearn practically all there is to know about Internet Protocol (IP).The concluding chapters talk about traffic management, congestionreduction, and high-speed networking technologies.
Computer Networks reveals the guts of what’s going on withcomputers that share data. Though way out of the league of mostcomputer users, true geeks with an interest in networking will findwhat they need here. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

“This third edition represents another major upgrade…But it has notlost track of its larger goal, to tell you not only the facts but thewhy behind the facts…What this book will teach you in today’s networkedworld will give the insight needed to work in tomorrow’s landscape.”-From the Foreword by David Clark, Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology “This book is valuable for students and professionals. Thanks to its various enhancements, it is unquestionably a richresource of knowledge on networking technologies. The interesting waythe authors wrote it causes readers to be absorbed in the book.” – IEEECommunications Magazine – Rafal Stankiewicz
